2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer vision.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to address player expectations.
This announcement follows a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire content from the president's announcement:
Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. Following several months of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
His management and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting him next week. We are all looking forward to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
The President
Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 alongside a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your group can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can expect more updates as production continues.
