The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being deemed a flight risk
The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

Background on Conviction

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
